How is it already mid February? It felt like January went on forever but February is just zipping by. It’s been a busy month at the store with lots of exciting classes going on and new spring yarns coming in. It’s kind of hard to think about spring right now, but I have a theory that if I start knitting with cotton now it will come quicker! It’s Odessa here and I thought I’d give a little update on the store. You might have noticed our webstore is currently down. Don’t worry! We have to do some system maintenance and upgrades as it just was not working like it should anymore. We’re hoping to have it back up soon. In the meantime, if you need to order yarn or check on what we have in, don’t hesitate to give us… Read more »
If you know me, you know that I am a clumsy person. I bump into coffee tables, have been know to slam into a wall when walking around a corner and generally carry more things in my arms than I am able which always ends up in a Monty Python-type comedy sketch. I am also strong, capable and get a lot of things done in a day and so my clumsiness adds a bit of extra challenges but it doesn’t stop me from going where I need to go, getting things done and sometimes creating something really wonderful. I think this is partly why I admire those that are so graceful, that seem to walk as though they are floating or ride a bike without banging into poles (yes that has happened too). We have all read knitting patterns… Read more »
This year we celebrate 50 years! #manosdeluruguay #manos50 #fairtrade A post shared by Manos del Uruguay Yarns (@manosdeluruguayyarns) on Mar 19, 2018 at 7:44am PDT This year, Manos del Uruguay is celebrating 50 years of their cooperative and we’re celebrating! We’ve carried their yarns here at Wolseley Wool for years and are always so excited when a new box of their gorgeous yarns come in the store to ooh and ahh over! Not only do they make beautiful yarns, but there is a great story behind the yarn. We’re kicking off our Manos celebration on Friday May 11th with a big party! From 7-9 PM Friday evening we will be having a great time, with wine and food from the area provided by Txoko, games, prizes, knitting and more! All Manos yarns will be 15% off and for every skein… Read more »
Hi! Odessa here talking about what she’s up to these days. Our gorgeous fall yarns are starting to come in and all I can think about is new sweaters. So of course I have two on the go now. The first is Riddari from Lopi. I’ve knit a few Lopi sweaters and wanted something with the same iconic yoke patterning but with a more relaxed fabric. I went all around the store looking at worsted and aran weight yarns from Malabrigo Rios to Cascade 220 Superwash Merino to Manos Alegria Grande but finally settled on Blue Sky Woolstok. It has lovely subtly heathered colours in a plump and lofty yarn. Perfect! I’ve knit with this yarn before and love the fabric it knits up into. I picked some of my favourite brights for the yoke and paired them with… Read more »
I love non-superwash wooly yarns. A woman I used to knit with used to explain her love of Lopi by saying “I like that it’s scratchy, that’s how you know it’s working.” For me it’s not so much that it iss scratchy, but with non-treated yarns you do often feel the tooth of the yarn, and that’s what lets me know that it has the kind of bloom that I love in projects. Right now the yarn that I’m in love with it Blue Sky Fiber’s Woolstok. Made from 100% Fine Highland wool, it is a lofty wooly light worsted weight yarn. Woolstok comes in 50g skeins, with 123 yards. It comes in 21 colours (all colours are included in the 21 Colours hat kits that have been so popular here in the shop), and the bloom of the… Read more »
I have always been a huge fan of all the Manos yarns and in recent years I am so impressed with their new yarns and colours. Alegria, a high twist sock yarn, Fino, a single blend merino/silk blend and Gloria, a high twist worsted yarn, have all quickly become my favourites. I have been eagerly awaiting this season’s new yarn from Manos and I was not disappointed. Manos Milo is a sport weight single yarn blended with merino and linen. It is so soft to the touch, which is a little unexpected from a linen yarn, and so squishy once it’s been knit up into a fabric with a wonderful drape. I knew we were going to focus on Manos at our recent Manitoba Fibre Festival and i wanted to have a new sample knit up. I chose the… Read more »
My latest yarn fave is an older classic from Rowan. Kidsilk Haze is a beautiful blend of super kid mohair and silk. To be perfectly honest, I have never really knit with mohair much before because I often find it a little picky but this yarn is so soft, both in the ball and in the garment. The other thing I love about it is that you can knit it in a wide range of gauges. The scarf I knit was on a 5mm needle, which is on the larger range of the recommended sizes, and the fabric is so light it holds it’s shape beautifully. I’m looking forward to mixing this yarn with other yarns to add a little loft and fluff and I think it would also be great using it in a shawl with striping. … Read more »
